Oh man, so I've been on a Marvel kick lately wonder why and I picked up "The Darkest Hour," Jim Butcher's Spider Man novel for subway reading. I loved every moment of it.
Cons:
It's short, and addictive, I blew through it in a few subway trips.
The villains are a bit simplistic. Which is not to say they aren't menacing, they are totally a credible threat that you want to see beaten, it's just their motivations and personalities are a little basic. Which doesn't bother me since I don't like villains anyway, but some might complain. I don't think this is a bad choice for Butcher, because I know he can write damn good villains, and they work for the story.
Pro's:
-A solid, awesome super hero story. I mean, there are some moral gray areas and hard decisions made, but at the end of the day the good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, and it manages to have complex characters without just making everyone an asshole.
-Jim Butcher basically proves once and for all that Joe Quesada is completely full of shit when it comes to super hero marriages. Spidey and MJ's marriage is one of the best parts of the books, and fits perfectly into the narrative. It manages to avoid most super hero marriage cliches (MJ is *gasp* understanding that Peter fighting crime is important) Plus not only does MJ have her own life and career, not only does she emotionally support Peter, but she is a total badass in a completely believable way.
-The Rino is an incredibly deep and interesting character. Let me repeat that, the Rhino, he of the stupid horn hat, is a deep, multifaceted person with an understandable back story that made me seriously care about the big guy, even while still keeping him an effective villain. Seriously, Butcher made the bloody Rhino a serious and cool character!
-I am pretty sure Butcher was born to write Spider Man's quips. On the subway I had to choke back laughs so many times people must think I'm nuts.
-Dr. Strange and Wong=totally awesome
-It was awesome, if you like Spider Man or superheroes, go buy it, now!
